Renaud's Family - Primer

This is not a masterlist - all the works, which currently are all small, are under the series tag - but a bit of background for the world of Renaud and his beloved family. I may expand on it later, but I wanted to get a start put together.

Renaud and his family are, of course, vampires. They live in a 'traditional' Court (common in their world, though not all vampires are part of one), location as yet unspecified. Renaud is the Master of it, a position he handles well but with little fuss.

Principal characters:

Renaud
Series namer, of course - all I've written in this world centres on Renaud or his family.
His Sire has appeared occasionally, thus far without a name, and was . . . suboptimal.
Renaud's family consists of one Childe of his own, Julian, and two Grand-Childer, Sylvester and Jacques, all of whom live with him.
Renaud is the oldest of their Court by far (the next oldest member is a few centuries younger, currently). Renaud remembers songs and history and perhaps even languages that no one else does, perhaps forgotten entirely by time. Occasionally they haunt him, but he's generally a happy person, looking to the present more than the past.

Renaud is laid-back and unflappable - he's too old to get worked up about nonsense, and too old and strong to let anyone else's working up bother him. He dotes on his Childe and if anything almost more on his Grand-Childer, who adore him in turn. Though he takes his position as Master seriously, he finds the politics of the Court (and the council) tiresome, and feels there's no point to being Master if he can't act as he pleases (which he always does).

Julian
Renaud's sole Childe (and it seems unlikely, especially with his Grand-Childer around as young things, that he will take another), Renaud, raised by a rather distant and brusque Sire at best, turned around and determined to be a caring, warm figure to his own Childe, and succeeded in spades, and Julian matured into a self-possessed, confident, and affectionate vampire.
Julian has two Childer of his own, Sylvester and Jacques, and relies on his Sire heavily to help him keep watch over them and raise them.

Julian is rather more concerned about manners, propriety, and appearances than his Sire, and occasionally scolds or badgers Renaud to please turn up on time, behave with the dignity of a Master. . . Renaud allows it with indulgent amusement and occasionally even obliges.

Sylvester
Julian's elder Childe, Sylvester was occasionally distressed or uncertain (anxious) when he was a baby vampire, but his Sire was always calm with him, and his Grand-Sire remembers his own rough years and is gentle and reassuring. Sylvester adores his baby 'brother' and (likely?) adjusted well when Julian brought him home; he occasionally pouts or fusses when Jacques is preoccupied elsewhere and not paying attention to him.

Sylvester is loud, impish, and irrepressible, and he has the shelter of an affectionate, protective Sire and a doting, powerful Grand-Sire - when he does occasionally push too far, the consequences rarely take him too hard. (Though if he crosses lines with Julian or Renaud, their disappointment cuts harder than any scolding would alone.) He crochets as a hobby.

Jacques
Julian's younger Childe, Jacques chose willingly to be turned, and has embraced his life with his family happily, more than content with their doting. He's playful with his brother and plays on being the youngest at times with his Grand-Sire or Sire. While he finds Sylvester's pouting amusing at times, he loves how much Sylvester wants to be with him and is in turn happy to take breaks or let himself be drawn into mischief.

Jacques is quiet, but not particularly retiring or lacking in confidence; he loves books, and history, and has a particular fondness for folktales and fairy tales.

Sylvester and Jacques call one another brothers - but not like that. ;) The entire family are somewhat traditionally incestuous; while it's not required of Childer to please their Sire (or elder generations) in any sense (and Renaud's Sire likely didn't bed him or reject him) it's neither particularly uncommon or common in their world. The youngsters especially love playing with their Grand-Sire.

It's uncommon for any of them to sleep alone - Renaud almost never, and Sylvester and Jacques usually either share with one another, or go together to their Grand-Sire's bed, or one to their Sire's and one to their Grand-Sire's, etc. Julian may be the one who sleeps alone the most, but only because he chooses to do so.

Other Characters:
(all vampires)

Older:

Amalia is not a member of Renaud's Court (perhaps a neighbouring one?), but she respects Renaud. She is somewhat younger than Renaud (but so are most vampires).

Lady Ana is another member of a neighbouring Court or perhaps one who does not belong to a Court. Gossip would have it that she hates Renaud - and might even be strong enough to pose a threat to him - but neither Renaud nor Julian are terribly concerned on that score, even when Renaud goes to meet her alone.

Yvonna is very old (near Renaud's age, perhaps?) and has, as Renaud admits, and some old vampires tend to, perhaps 'gone odd'; she lives in a castle that is falling down in parts/places. She is part of no Court. Renaud considers her a friend.

Younger:
(roughly Sylvester or Jacques' age, or not much older)

Francois is friendly with Sylvester and Jacques (though he is nervous of Renaud, and perhaps of older vampires/vampires his own Sire's age in general), and has a crush on Sylvester which he can be rather ridiculously over-the-top about. Sylvester finds the crush laughable and at times annoying. Francois' Sire is unnamed, but female, and perhaps spoils him (and with less counterbalance than Renaud or Julian give).

Hyota is perhaps a little older than Sylvester and Jacques; he does not know them well. His Sire raised him well, with a sense of responsibility, and he approaches being a member of a Court the same way.
